Le président de la South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA), le Dr Lackram Bodoe, a déclaré qu’une sauvegarde des déchets médicaux à l’hôpital général de San Fernando était due à un retard de paiement à un entrepreneur et non au dysfonctionnement de l’incinérateur.
Répondant aux plaintes concernant les dangers posés par les déchets médicaux accumulés, qui comprenaient des membres amputés, des aiguilles et des articles tachés de sang, Bodoe a assuré que l’incinérateur de 9 millions de dollars installé l’année dernière fonctionnait bien.

S’adressant aux membres des médias lors du symposium de SWRHA sur le leadership à la Southern Academy of Performing Arts mercredi, Bodoe a déclaré:

«C’est un nouvel incinérateur qui a été installé l’année dernière et le problème concernait un entrepreneur qui était censé enlever les ordures et il y a eu un retard de financement et c’est ce qui a créé une situation temporaire hier.
Interrogé sur la date à laquelle la situation sera corrigée, il a déclaré: «Je viens de recevoir l’assurance du PDG que la question est traitée au moment où nous parlons, donc je m’attends à ce que d’ici la fin de la journée, elle soit réglée.»
En outre, Bodoe a déclaré que la SWRHA envisageait également d’introduire un nouveau type de technologie, appelée technologie des ondes radio pour l’incinération, qui était beaucoup plus respectueuse de l’atmosphère.
Cependant, un représentant de l’Association de la fonction publique, qui souhaitait rester anonyme, a déclaré que l’incinérateur tombait en panne régulièrement depuis son installation l’année dernière et ne fonctionnait pas à ce moment-là.
«Ils ont même dû retourner à l’ancien incinérateur, ce qui est dangereux et insalubre pour les personnes qui exploitent cet incinérateur. Depuis la semaine dernière jeudi, l’incinérateur (nouveau) est en panne », a-t-il ajouté.
Il a déclaré que les travailleurs avaient agi mardi parce que depuis la semaine dernière, ils avaient été assurés que le problème des ordures aurait été réglé.
