23 Missouri School Districts, One Transportation Company Receive $1.03 Million to Help Purchase Buses to Lower Diesel Emissions

(Lenexa, Kan., April 22, 2020) – Today, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a total of $1,030,000 to 23 Missouri school districts and one Missouri school bus transportation company to replace 52 older diesel school buses.

The funds are part of $11.5 million to replace 580 buses for 157 school bus fleets in 43 states and Puerto Rico, each of which will receive rebates through EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding. The new buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health problems such as asthma and lung damage.

“Earth Day’s primary goal is to protect the environment for future generations. These rebates help do just that by continuing to improve air quality across the country and providing children with a safe and healthy way to get to school,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “While many fleets are currently off the road, when these local school districts start up again, EPA and the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act have helped equip them with cleaner running buses, moving farther along the route to healthier kids and communities.”

“We believe protecting the health of our children and youth is one of our primary missions,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Gulliford.  “Removing old diesel-engines from our roads and replacing them with reduced-emission engines will provide further protection.”

Congressman Billy Long (MO-07): “Last year, I was proud to sponsor the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, which extended the EPA’s grant program to retrofit older diesel engines to make them cleaner and more efficient. This initiative has proven to be one of the EPA’s most cost-effective ways of reducing harmful pollutants. I believe we need to invest in targeted, commonsense environmental programs to improve our environment rather than supporting radical and impractical legislation like the Green New Deal. Grants through this program will go directly toward upgrading diesel school buses in Missouri’s 7th district, ensuring that our children breathe cleaner air on their way to and from school.”

“On behalf of the National School Transportation Association (NSTA), and in recognition of the 50th Earth Day, we would like to express our continued gratitude and support to EPA for their stewardship of the DERA program,” said NSTA president John Benish. “As our partnership continues to grow, many school bus contractors around the country have been able to upgrade their fleets with newer, cleaner, and more efficient buses. The beneficiaries of this partnership are the school children we transport every day, as well as the communities where we operate. We look forward to advancing this cause even more in the future.”

“Sometimes you don’t miss something until it’s not there, and many parents miss sending their kids to school on the convenient yellow school bus right now,” said Executive Director of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS)Charlie Hood. “After we weather the coronavirus crisis, be assured that school buses will return, transporting students safely and economically.  Especially with the budget challenges public schools will be facing for the foreseeable future, the EPA’s School Bus Rebate program is a boon.  It helps school districts and contractors replace their old school buses with new ones that are more cost-effective and meet stringent, modern standards for reduced emissions and clean air. This 50th Earth Day is a great time to mark how DERA has been a plus for both taxpayers and the environment.”

Applicants replacing buses with engine model years 2006 and older will receive rebates between $15,000 and $20,000 per bus, depending on the size of the bus.

EPA has implemented standards to make newer diesel engines more than 90% cleaner, but many older diesel school buses are still operating. These older diesel engines emit large amounts of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which are linked to instances of aggravated asthma, lung damage, and other serious health problems.

Since 2008, the DERA program has funded more than 1,000 clean diesel projects across the country, reducing emissions in more than 70,000 engines. A comprehensive list of the 2020 DERA school bus recipients can be found at www.epa.gov/dera/awarded-dera-rebates.

U.S. EPA and CBP Act to Protect the Public from Unregistered “Virus Shut Out” Product Imported into California

Unsubstantiated claims to protect against viruses threaten public health

LOS ANGELES – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced they have prevented a significant number of shipments of illegal health products from entering the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). These products, such as the item Virus Shut Out, are not registered with the EPA and are being halted under federal pesticide laws. The safety and efficacy of these items against viruses have not been evaluated. In addition, their labeling – including directions for use – are not provided in the English language as required by law, and on-line advertising materials contain misleading claims about their safety and effectiveness.

EPA has been working with CBP to identify and seize the illegal products, which are being imported from Japan and Hong Kong through International Mail Facilities (IMFs) in Los Angeles and San Francisco. To date, CBP has seized more than 7,800 illegal products. EPA and CBP will continue monitoring for products with illegal pesticidal claims. In addition, EPA has reached out to several companies to remove the products from their online marketplaces.

“EPA takes our responsibility to protect Americans from fraudulent products seriously,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “EPA is increasing the number of approved disinfectants on the market while taking action to prevent dishonest actors from selling fraudulent and illegal items that do nothing to protect Americans from the coronavirus.”

“It is critical that people only use EPA-registered disinfectants and follow label directions for proper use,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator John Busterud. “EPA will not tolerate companies selling illegal disinfectants and making false or misleading public health claims during this pandemic crisis.”

“As America’s frontline CBP is committed to work collaboratively with our EPA partners to detect, intercept and prevent the introduction of unsafe products that could potentially harm the U.S. consumer,” said CBP’s Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles Carlos C. Martel. “By combining their expertise, training and risk-assessment skills, CBP officers remain vigilant facilitating lawful trade and preventing illicit products to enter the commerce of the U.S.”

“In the midst of this worldwide emergency, there are still those that would seek to take advantage by making false claims, scamming, and selling inferior products,” said CBP’s San Francisco Director of Field Operations Brian J. Humphrey.  “CBP’s primary goal is to protect the American public, and we will not allow unauthorized products such as these to enter the country.”

Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, products that claim to kill or repel bacteria or germs are considered pesticides and must be registered with the EPA prior to distribution or sale. Public health claims can only be made regarding products that have been properly tested and are registered with the EPA. The agency will not register a pesticide until it has been determined that it will not pose an unreasonable risk when used according to the label directions. Products not registered by EPA can be harmful to human health, cause adverse effects, and may not be effective against the spread of germs.

PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 2020) – In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $80,000 today to replace four older diesel school buses in Upshur County. The funds are among $11.5 million going to replace 580 older diesel school buses in 157 school bus fleets in 43 states and Puerto Rico, each of which will receive rebates through EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding. The new buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health problems such as asthma and lung damage.

“As we continue to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, EPA continues to be committed to providing communities access to rebates to improve and replace aging school buses that will improve air quality across the country and provide children with a safe and healthy way to get to school,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “While many fleets are currently off the road as we all social distance during COVID-19, these local school districts will start up again, and EPA is proud to have helped equip them with cleaner running buses.”

“With all the challenges our public schools face, DERA helps school districts replace their old school buses with new ones that are more cost-effective and meet standards for reduced emissions, which means cleaner air,” said EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Cosmo Servidio. “This 50th Earth Day is a great opportunity to highlight how this program has been a boon for both local taxpayers and the environment.”

Applicants replacing buses with engine model years 2006 and older will receive rebates between $15,000 and $20,000 per bus, depending on the size of the bus.

PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 2020) – In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $240,000 today to replace 12 older diesel school buses in Maryland. In Maryland, the funds are going to:

  • Allegany County School District ($40,000)
  • Frederick County School District ($200,000)

“As we continue to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, EPA continues to be committed to providing communities access to rebates to improve and replace aging school buses that will improve air quality across the country and provide children with a safe and healthy way to get to school,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “While many fleets are currently off the road as we all social distance during COVID-19, these local school districts will start up again, and EPA is proud to have helped equip them with cleaner running buses.”

“With all the challenges our public schools face, DERA helps school districts replace their old school buses with new ones that are more cost-effective and meet standards for reduced emissions which means cleaner air,” said EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Cosmo Servidio. “This 50th Earth Day is a great opportunity to highlight how this program has been a boon for both local taxpayers and the environment.”

Applicants replacing buses with engine model years 2006 and older will receive rebates between $15,000 and $20,000 per bus, depending on the size of the bus.

EPA has implemented standards to make newer diesel engines more than 90 percent cleaner, but many older diesel school buses are still operating. These older diesel engines emit large amounts of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which are linked to instances of aggravated asthma, lung damage and other serious health problems.

“Just a few weeks ago, I saw firsthand the power of Frederick’s electric bus fleet with County Executive Jan Gardner. These buses are green and save green; they are good for our environment and the County’s bottom line,” said Congressman David Trone (Maryland, 6th District). “I am thrilled to see this funding for Frederick County Public Schools’ bus fleet. As we celebrate Earth Day, we must continue to invest in green transit infrastructure to protect the health and safety of our students and our environment.”

Since 2008, the DERA program has funded more than 1,000 clean diesel projects across the country, reducing emissions in more than 70,000 engines. A comprehensive list of the 2020 DERA school bus recipients can be found at www.epa.gov/dera/awarded-dera-rebates.

“The EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act plays an important role in reducing pollutants that are linked to health problems,” said Congressman Denver Riggleman (Virginia, 5th District). “I am grateful for Ambassador Wheeler’s work to improve our environment and excited to see Halifax county benefit from this program by receiving an upgraded school bus fleet.  This is great news for the 5th District that will help students as well as improve air quality in our community.”

“The Loudoun County Public School system has been a longtime leader for sustainability in our community,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (Virginia, 10th District).  “Their ambitious efforts over the years to create greener learning environments for our students have saved taxpayer dollars and contributed significantly to improving our public and environmental health. This federal grant to replace older diesel school buses will make an important difference in our local efforts to build a healthy and sustainable future for our kids here in Loudoun County.”
