Administrator Wheeler Meets with Disinfectant Manufacturers Highlighting Agency Work to Fight Coronavirus. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler hosted a series of conference calls with large and small disinfectant manufacturers, discussing the agency’s expanded and expedited work in response to the outbreak under the Emerging Viral Pathogens Guidance for Antimicrobial Pesticides. “Today’s calls were extremely productive and demonstrate the importance of public and private sector collaboration, not only in times of great stress, but every day,” said Administrator Wheeler. “Our collaboration is critical to slowing the spread of this virus, keeping us safe and healthy. By expediting reviews – both in labeling familiar products, and by approving new products for market – we’re aiding American families and communities across America.”

2019 Year in Review. EPA released the 2019 Year in Review outlining major accomplishments and environmental progress during the Trump administration. “Under President Trump, we have fulfilled many promises to the American people to address some of our most important environmental and human health challenges while unleashing the economy and fostering innovation,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. Among FY 2019 EPA accomplishments: finalizing 16 deregulatory actions, saving Americans more than $1.5 billion in regulatory costs; inviting 38 new projects in 18 states to apply for WIFIA loans totaling $6 billion dollars to help finance over $12 billion dollars in water infrastructure investments and create up to 200,000 jobs; and much more.

PFAS Action Plan: Program Update. EPA has made significant progress under the PFAS Action Plan to help states and local communities address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and protect public health. “The Trump Administration’s efforts under the PFAS Action Plan over the past year represent the first time in EPA’s 50-year history that we have tapped all of our program offices to address an emerging contaminant of concern like PFAS — and our EPA staff efforts have been unprecedented,” said Administrator Wheeler.

Annual Automotive Trends Report. We released the annual Automotive Trends Report, which provides a single source of information about new light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, fuel economy, technology data, and auto manufacturers’ performance in light of the agency’s GHG emissions standards. The report finds that Model Year (MY) 2018 vehicle fuel economy was 25.1 miles per gallon, slightly higher than the 24.9 miles per gallon MY 2017. Since MY 2004, when the fleet averaged 19.3 mpg, fuel economy and CO2 emissions have improved in twelve out of fourteen years.

Protect your family from accidental poisoning. Kids are at home and one of the things that all parents know is, little kids can move fast. Kids are always curious to explore their world. For this reason, EPA encourages parents and care givers to always keep potentially harmful products in a high cabinet – well out of the reach of children. Poison Prevention Week in March is a reminder to protect against accidental poisoning.

TRI Updated. EPA released the annual report and analysis which showcases industry practices for managing waste and reducing pollution at nearly 22,000 facilities that submitted TRI data for calendar year 2018. EPA encourages facilities to learn from their counterparts’ best practices and adopt additional methods for reducing pollution.

EPA Awards State of Texas More Than $1.5 Million to Monitor Particle Air Pollution

 

CONTACT: Jennah Durant, [email protected]   EPA Awards State of Texas More Than $1.5 Million to Monitor Particle Air Pollution DALALS (April 2, 2020) — Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the state of Texas $1,543,710 to monitor air quality for fine particulate matter, also called particle pollution or soot. The grant is provided under a cooperative agreement with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to develop and maintain monitoring programs under requirements of the federal Clean Air Act.   “Monitoring for particle pollution is crucial to controlling it and protecting public health in our communities,” said Regional Administrator Ken McQueen. “EPA is proud to continue supporting TCEQ’s strong air quality programs with this grant.”   The grant covers programs to monitor fine particulate matter, which consists of solid and liquid particles no larger than 2.5 microns in diameter. The funding will help TCEQ’s air monitoring program prevent and control air pollution and implement national primary and secondary air quality standards.   Particulate matter, also called particle pollution, contains microscopic solids or liquids which may be harmful if inhaled. The particles can become lodged in the lungs, or can even get in your bloodstream, causing respiratory or heart problems. People with heart or lung disease, children, and older adults are most likely to be affected by particle pollution.
